Alterno

Some stories require worlds that do not yet exist.

AlternateDayZ turns actions within an existing game into stories. But that game also defines what players can do, what can happen, and how the world can respond. Greater creative freedom requires the ability to build the experience itself.

Alterno is a system I am building to help AI agents create complex interactive experiences in Unreal Engine. The ambition is to explore narrative through experiences with the depth and quality of professional games.

This requires more than generating assets. Agents must understand the project, implement behavior, inspect the results, and revise their work while keeping the author’s creative intent in view.

Technically, Alterno acts as a compiler between text-based authoring and Unreal Engine. It gives agents typed Python authoring surfaces, uses intermediate representations to validate and translate their changes, and applies them to Unreal-native assets. Agents can work with readable, editable code while Unreal remains authoritative for the resulting world and its execution.
